Homeschool students
Apply to ASU to earn your degree online
The unique experiences of homeschool students contribute to the diversity of ASU Online. You are considered a homeschool student if you graduated high school in a homeschool setting and have not completed an associate degree or higher.

Understand admission requirements
Homeschool students must meet ASU’s general admission requirements. You may also need to submit specific documentation to confirm completion of requirements. Here is an overview of important items to keep in mind as you prepare your application:
- Homeschool transcripts or an Affidavit of Completion of Secondary School Education will be required to verify that you’ve graduated high school. (See Step 6 for details about transcripts.)
- A high school equivalency diploma can be used to meet requirements, including:
- GED
- HiSet
- TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion)
- California High School Proficiency Examination
- College Credit Pathway
- Laboratory Science Courses documentation may need to be sent to verify that you’ve completed 3 different lab sciences. After you submit your application, a task on My ASU titled “Course Description” will appear if you need to verify your lab coursework.
Note: My ASU is an online portal you’ll receive access to within three business days after you submit your application.
Review course competency requirements
If you have under 24 completed college credits post-high school, you will need to meet the following course competency requirements:
- Four years math.
- Four years English (non-ESL/ELL courses).
- Three years lab sciences (one year each from biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences or physics).
- Two years social sciences (including one year American history).
- Two years same second language.
- One year fine arts or one year career and technical education.
Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.00 in each subject area. Most competencies may also be met by test scores or college courses.
Review competency requirements for more details.
Some majors have higher admission requirements. To find the requirements for your specific program, visit our degree search.
Review high school aptitude requirements
If you have under 24 completed college credits post-high school, you will also need to meet one of the following aptitude requirements:
- Top 25% in high school graduating class.
- 3.00 GPA in competency courses (4.00 = "A").
- ACT: 22 (24 nonresidents).
- SAT: 1120 (1180 nonresidents).
Complete online application
Now that you understand admission requirements, you’re ready to apply by completing the undergraduate admission application online. To complete the application, you’ll need to:
- Provide information about yourself.
- Select your program and start date.
- Tell us about your school history.
- Report your grades or notify ASU that you’ll send a transcript.
- Help us determine your Arizona residency.
- Review and submit your application.
When completing the online admission application, you will be asked which high school you attended. Enter the name of your hometown into this field. Scroll through the city options until you find homeschool toward the bottom.
As a homeschool applicant, you have the option to self-report your high school grades in the application or submit a homeschool transcript to ASU. (See step 6.) To expedite the admission decision, self-report your high school grades in the application.
Don’t self-report high school grades → complete the application faster but wait longer for an admission decision.
Self-report high school grades→ spend more time on the application but receive an admission decision faster.
Pay the application fee
When you’re reviewing your application, you’ll have the option to pay your nonrefundable application fee before your final submission or later. If you choose to pay later, you will need to wait a few days until your My ASU account is set up. You will receive an email with instructions on how to activate My ASU.
The application fee covers the administrative cost of processing applications. Your application will not be processed until the fee is paid.
- $70: ASU Online programs.
You can pay using a credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover). You can also mail a check to Admission Services (payable to Arizona State University) at the below address:

Send in your transcripts
Homeschool applicants may self-report grades in the application or submit a homeschool transcript (if applicable). The transcript must include the courses you have taken with the credit and grade associated with each course and a signature from a parent or guardian who oversaw the education.
- If you have completed courses from a traditional high school, you may self-report your grades in the application or have your high school send your official transcripts to ASU.
- If you have coursework from both a traditional high school and homeschool, self-report grades for both in the application or have a transcript sent to ASU.
- If you have earned college or university credit, request to have your official transcripts sent directly to ASU from the issuing institution.
- If a homeschool transcript isn’t available and you only need proof of your high school graduation, you may complete the Affidavit of Completion of Secondary School Education form instead. The affidavit must be completed by a parent or guardian who oversaw the education.
