In December 2023, Jessica Janssen will graduate from Arizona State University’s online Master of Science in nursing with a concentration in nursing education program, a significant milestone marking the culmination of her academic journey in the field of nursing. Coming from a rural community, Janssen’s determination to further her education led her to ASU Online, propelling her into the world of advanced health care studies.
Living in Sandpoint, Idaho, Janssen needed a program that offered flexibility without compromising academic excellence. She chose ASU Online for its reputation as a distinguished academic and research institution.
“When I researched programs, ASU Online was a stand-out as an industry innovator in online instruction; not merely an adopter,” Janssen said.
Janssen's journey at ASU Online was driven by her aspiration to excel in the field of nursing. Accreditation was a crucial factor in her decision-making process, ensuring that her degree would be recognized and valued in the professional world.
“Accreditation was paramount for me,” Janssen explained. “Employers and academic institutions, should I wish to continue with doctoral studies, require a nursing degree from an accredited institution.”
Despite residing far from the physical campus, Janssen was impressed with her feeling of engagement as an online student.
“I’ve been very impressed with the extent to which ASU Online can make a student like me, who lives over 1,000 miles away and has never been to campus, feel so connected,” Janssen said.
The extensive online resources, including access to the library and various academic materials, regular communication from her success coach and the opportunity to participate in events from a distance helped Janssen feel supported as a student, regardless of her location.
“I can participate in on-campus events, such as job fairs, grad fairs and professional development conferences, because they are live-streamed or somehow offered in parallel for online students, which is a testament to ASU’s inclusivity for every student, near and far,” Janssen said.
Throughout her education, Janssen discovered invaluable habits that contributed to her success.
In her advice to fellow students, she said, “Consider working as a student grader while you’re a graduate student. It’s a great opportunity to apply some of the concepts you’re learning about, such as learner evaluation and navigating a learning management system like Canvas, from the instructor’s point of view.”
She also encouraged other students to get involved in ASU's Graduate Student Government (GSG), offering a plethora of resources and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Post-graduation, Janssen is set to pursue her Academic Novice Nurse Educator Certification (CNE®n). With a focus on remote academic nurse educator roles or health care-related course design, she envisions a future enriched with learning and contributing to the healthcare landscape.
In reflecting on her journey, Janssen expressed deep gratitude toward her ASU Online mentors and professors for their unwavering support and guidance. Equally, she recognized her family, especially her spouse and children, for being her pillars of strength and motivation throughout her academic pursuit.
