Prepare for a career in electrical engineering
ASU offers one of only a few online electrical engineering degrees accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. This means that this online degree meets the commission’s educational standards and prepares you to excel in engineering fields.
You’ll begin this program with fundamental courses focused on advanced math, science and the engineering design process. Later in the program, you’ll have the opportunity to take specialty courses covering electromagnetic fields, microprocessors, solid-state electronics, hardware design, circuits, photovoltaic cells, energy systems and more. Lab courses include industry-standard design and simulation tools to help you apply your knowledge and gain practical experience.
As a student, you’ll also have the option to pursue a concentration in electric power and energy systems. This concentration offers specialized coursework and training to prepare you for careers in the power and energy industry, focusing on the generation, distribution and management of electric power.
The skills you’ll need to succeed in electrical engineering
To succeed in electrical engineering, you’ll need to master the art of assessing, creating and improving electrical equipment and energy systems. This requires a profound understanding of electrical engineering concepts along with essential skills such as problem-solving and project management. In this online electrical engineering degree, you’ll develop these capabilities through courses and labs focused on circuits, signal processing, antennas, power system analysis and more. You’ll also enhance your mathematical reasoning, computer programming and critical thinking skills.
Professional licensure and certification
ASU offers programs that lead to professional licensure with the state of Arizona and may allow graduates to be eligible for licensure in other states. Students should check the professional licensure list for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering to determine if this program meets requirements in their state. Please note that not all programs within the Fulton Schools lead to professional licensure.
Will my diploma say ‘online’?
No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.”
Online electrical engineering courses
If you’re a full-time student, you can earn your online electrical engineering degree in four years, though the actual time you spend may vary based on your circumstances. In general, during the first two years of study, you’ll develop a foundation in the essential principles of engineering and electricity. Over the following two years, you may specialize in specific electrical engineering subfields. This program concludes with a two-semester design lab, during which you’ll work with your peers to create an original project.
The jobs you could get with an electrical engineering degree
Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for roles in a variety of fields working on the electrical components of computers, robots, cell phones, navigation systems and more. Many of these jobs are well-compensated and offer the opportunity to make an impact on energy systems and technological development. Potential career paths include, but aren’t limited to:
Aerospace Engineer
Computer Hardware Engineer
Electrical Engineer
Electronics Engineer
Energy Engineer
Nuclear Engineer
Radio Frequency Identification Device Specialist
Solar Energy Systems Engineer
